History

The birth-place of Hman-Cho Traditional Medicine family was the Hman-Cho Village, Chaung-U Township, Monywa District in Sagaing Region, Myanmar. In the old times, the word “Hman-Cho” was pronounced as “Ma-Gyo” and this is according to the maxim which says, “Write correctly; but, pronounce as it is pronounced”. However, as time goes by, nowadays, it is written as “Hman-Cho”, and pronounced also as “Hman-Cho.”

As a founder and first-generation practitioner of Hman-Cho Traditional Medicine Family, the most venerable and the lord of grace, the Great Hman-Cho Sayardaw Phayargyi (Very senior and venerable monk), contributed to Myanmar society by curing various kinds of tumors, ulcers and other disease for free of charge with the command of his great grace and goodwill.

Since the Hman-Cho Sayardawgyi successfully saved the lives of many patients from their fatal tumor and other diseases, there evolved a famous proverbial saying which reads, “When it comes to disease and medicine, Hman-Cho is the best; and, when it comes to astrology, Kya-O is the best.”

While successfully practicing the traditional medicine practices, the lord of grace, Hman-Cho Sayardawgyi, closely coached and taught the traditional medicine theories and practices to his bloodline nephew, U Ba Khin, who is the second-generation practitioner of Hman-Cho Traditional Medicine Family. Accordingly, Sayargyi U Ba Khin performed as an assistant to Hman-Cho Sayardawgyi in treating and curing the innumerable number of patients while studying the theories of traditional medicine from the Sayardawgyi.

Later on, Sayargyi (A great medicinal practitioner) U Ba Khin not only served at the clinics at the Nyaung-U prison and at the Kyimyindaing Dermatology Hospital, but also tried actively to promote the development and ubiquitous acceptance of the traditional medicine in Myanmar.

As a third-generation of Hman-Cho Traditional Medicine Family, Sayargyi U Hla Htay, a bloodline nephew of Sayargyi U Ba Khin, took the legacy of his uncle and had continued the family’s traditional medicinal practices while promoting them in order to be widely accepted by the Myanmar people and the beyond.

In fact, Sayargyi U Hla Htay was a successful and famous practitioner of traditional medicine in Myanmar, and that was because, he outstandingly learnt all the theories and practices of Hman-Cho traditional medicine not only from his granduncle, the Hman-Cho Sayardaw Gyi, but also from his uncle Sayargyi U Ba Khin.

Moreover, Sayargyi U Hla Htay made a synthesis on the traditional medicinal theories and well-tested practices, and wrote a traditional medicinal book, namely, “Practices on Tumor and Ulcer Curing”. The abstract of that book was formally presented by his wife Sayarmagyi Daw Tin Nwe Oo at the Myanmar Traditional Medicine Conference held in 1986. Moreover, Hman-Cho Sayargyi U Hla Htay and Sayarmagyi Daw Tin Nwe Oo systematically manufactured and first marketed the traditional medicines which not only strictly followed the precise methods of Hman-Cho Sayargyi U Pyin Nyar, but also had been successfully used in curing the patients by them for many years.

Until now, the fourth-generation of Hman-Cho Traditional Medicine Family, the descendants of Sayargyi U Hla Htay, have been pursuing the continuous upgrading of the quality of traditional medicines, which have a firm basis on the essence of the family’s long standing and well-tested traditional medicinal theories and practices, with the application of modern manufacturing systems, machines and practices.

With the aim of offering the effective and good quality traditional medicine products at the reasonable price for Myanmar people, the Hman-Cho Traditional Medicine business was first developed as a family business with only five employees in 1968. It developed into a small-to-medium (SME) business with more than 40 employees in 1989. Since 2018, it has been incorporated as a private limited company and until now it is operated with more than 120 employees.

In 2019, Hman-Cho Company extended a quality control department into its organizational structure and established an in-house quality control laboratory in order to further upgrade the originally good quality Hman-Cho traditional medicine products. Accordingly, in February, 2023, the factory and production facilities of Hman-Cho Company have been awarded with the ISO 9001: 2015 (Quality Management System) through the close guidance and inspection of Bureau Vertias Certification (Thailand Ltd.).

Up to the present, the factory and production facilities of Hman-Cho Company Limited have been operating according to the ISO 9001: 2015 quality management system and good manufacturing practices (GMP) guidelines.
